Biology being an elaborate subject, requires the students to remember a variety of things. So, as a natural consequence, it may become a nightmare to many students. Now, as the students lose their interest in the subject, it becomes very difficult to teach and let them understand biology.
The drawback of our present educational system is basically the lack of interactive lessons and proper visualization of the concepts. Thus a gap is created between the physical (real) and the theoretical (virtual) world. To minimize this gap, augmented reality has been incorporated in the education realm to enhance the way students learn.
What is Augmented Reality?
This is a technology which superimposes a digital image of our view of the real world and thus it bridges the gap between the physical and real worlds.
With augmented reality, the students can now interact with the digital information overlaid on the physical objects. For example, using an augmented reality tool, students can now look on a particular plant and see superimposed information of that plant on their viewing device.
Why AR for Learning Biology?
As the students face difficulty understand complex concepts, the AR can be used to learn them easily in an interactive way. The AR allows the students to visualize the topics in 3D models and in real time. With various AR tools, the students can now get the knowledge of every physical thing on their device. Here the biological subjects are mentioned in which AR can help to enhance the learning experience.
- In Botany:
The present way of learning lacks the interactivity and hence the application of AR to learn botany can be very significant as it would allow the students to point at different plant species and get complete details of that plant on their devices. This would reduce the textbook dependency and improve interaction with the physical world.
- In Zoology:
With AR, the students can easily learn about the animal kingdom, evolution, structure, etc. by interacting with the physical world through their digital devices. For example, if the students point a device to a cat, the full evolution of the species, evolution details, etc. would be displayed digitally.
- In Paleontology:
The students studying paleontology can bring the fossils back to life using AR and overlaying digital content on the devices. Thus the students would be engaged as they would be allowed to view interactive information of the different prehistoric life by pointing their devices at such objects or to the images from textbooks.
- In Biotechnology:
Now the students can learn by interacting with the physical world with the help of AR. This would make learning more effective as the students can now visualize the concepts deeply and understand the principles thoroughly.
The use of Augmented reality is not only limited to learning biology. The possibilities of AR are wide and fascinating. If AR is used strategically in education, learning would surely be more engaging and effective.
